Gravity

To introduce our unit on space, we made a little magic with gravity.  After discussing Sir Isaac Newton's laws of motion, we set up a demonstration and made predictions.  You need to visualize three cups of water beneath a pie pan or tray.  Balance three tissue tubes directly over the cups.  Place three eggs on the tops of the tubes.  I highly recommend using eggs that have been hard boiled.  Now, donning a magic cape and high hat (magic is always such a thrill), pull the tray quickly away.  What happens to the tissue tubes?  What happens to the eggs?  Why?

Ants

There was a lot to learn about ants.  Sweet Emma
was the perfect model to demonstrate the body parts:
head, thorax, abdomen, jointed legs, and antennae.  Pretty nifty, huh?

Snails

Our study of snails was a huge success.  We learned that snails are mollusks and are related to the octopus, squid, and clam.  We investigated their habitats, weighed them, measured them, and had snail races.  It was fascinating to observe their muscle walls as they climbed the sides of plastic cups, and to see their radulas as they nibbled on chocolate.  Our snail paintings were real works of art.
